Reading Assignment 8

Pip arrives at Miss Havisham's and asks Miss Havisham to spare money for Mr. Jaggers. You then find out that Pip tells Estella he always loved her. Estella has not understood Pip's love towards her all the time he has loved Estella. I think Estella acts rude to Pip while they are talking, because she then says that she is going to marry Drummle right in front of Pip. Pip feels upset after hearing that, because he doesn't want Estella to marry Drummle, he wants her to feel happy. I feel that Pip acted that way, because of how Estella didn't understand Pip's love towards her, which caused him to feel upset. Then Pip receives a note from Wemmick, telling Pip not to go home. Wemmick explains to Pip that he is being watched and thinks Compeyson is involved with it. I think after being informed like that, Pip feels that Wemmick has always cared for him and wants him to be safe. Another person trying to be safe, is Magwitch, in which he moves by the river, and changes his name to Mr. Cambell. Pip was then informed that Magwitch is Estella's father. Since Estella was adopted, I kind of had a feeling that Magwitch was her father, because he was convict, and he probably wasn't there most of Estella's life. Pip then receives a note from Wemmick, telling him that Magwitch needs to escape soon.

Reading Assignment 7

After all the bad news about Mrs. Joe's passing, Pip had a feeling that Orlick was involved with this incident. The author wants the reader to think that it was Orlick, because of how Orlick got into a fight with Mr. and Mrs Joe earlier. The reader then finds out that Mrs. Joe's last words involved Pip and Joe. I know after reading that, I feel that Mrs. Joe always did care for both of them, but it might of just felt that she didn't sometimes. Since Pip needed help with his debts, Mr. Jaggers then gives Pip some money to help. Mr. Jaggers definitely seems to be a good friend towards Pip, because he helps him in many ways. Then Pip's feelings toward Estella grew more, because the reader finds out that Pip always felt jealous when people were near her. Pip also feels that Estella is favoring Drummle over him. Pip then meets his convict and after they are done talking Pip feels that the convict is a great benefit. In this story Dickens chose the convicts first name, which is Abel, because he is a good person towards Pip, and that name represents a name from a good person from another story. Then Pip and Herbert persuade Magwitch to leave England, because he could be in great danger.

Reading Assignment 6

Pip or Handel, as Herbert calls him, is on the streets and is convinced to come to a dinner party. The dinner party was at Wemmick's house and Pip feels that Wemmick is a nice person to have as a friend. After the dinner Pip receives a letter from Biddy, telling him that Joe and Mr. Wopsle are coming to London. Pip is then preparing himself for Joe's arrival. When Joe gets there, he tells Pip things about at home, and about how Estella is home now, in which she wants to see Pip. Even though I already knew that Joe acts like a good friend towards Pip, this shows that he is a very good friend, because he is telling Pip everything back at home. Pip then finds out that Mr. Pumblechook is Pip's earliest patron and founder of his fortunes. Pip then finds out that Orlick is at Miss Havisham's. I also think that Pip doesn't like Orlick being there just because of how he got into a fight with Mr. and Mrs Joe. Pip then felt that Estella was not acting that nice to Pip with how she was showing her manners. Pip was then feeling that he could have been happier and felt better towards himself if he have never met Miss Havisham. Then making Pip feeling worse, he receives a letter that said Mrs. Joe Gargery had past away and he had to attend the funeral.

Reading Assignment 5

Pip finally arrives in London, in which he meets Mr. Jaggers. The reader should think that Pip is feeling relieved, because he is with someone that he has already met back at home. When Pip is walking through London, he had some doubts and he was not sure of what he thought of London. Pip then finds out that he will be staying at Mr. Pocket's for a while. Pip then meets Herbert Pocket, the boy Pip got into a fight with at Miss Havisham's. The reader should think that Pip and Herbert are starting to become friends, even though they had that fight. Herbert also calls Pip Handel instead of Pip. Pip feels that Herbert is calling him Handel, because he is a gentleman now. You can determine that they are becoming friends, because Herbert is teaching Pip things, and also telling him things about Miss Havisham. Pip finds out that Estella was brought up by Miss Havisham, to have revenge on all men. Pip also hears about how Miss Havisham was going to get married, but her husband never showed up for the wedding. Pip also realizes that with her husband not showing up for the wedding, is the reason why she acts the way she does. You could also figure out that Mr. Jaggers is a friend to Pip by the way he acts toward Pip. An example of Mr. Jaggers being a friendly person to Pip is that Mr. Jaggers gave Pip money for him to have.
